What to Do When There Are Suspicious People Around
The arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. on July 16, 2009, caused uproar all over the world, especially among the African American communities. Not only was he a good friend of Barack Obama, but he was also a Harvard professor.
He was questioned and arrested right at his own home in Cambridge after a neighbor called 911, thinking that Gates was a burglar when, in fact, he was just struggling to open a property.
It was definitely a huge mistake, but the truth is with the rate things are going in our environment, you can never really be too sure. It is everyone’s responsibility to be more mindful of neighbors and strangers. Most importantly, everyone should always keep oneself alert when there are suspicious people around.
When you happen to encounter people who may not be familiar to you, who always take a look at your property or linger at your yard, or who constantly nag you at your own home, you may want to take the following steps:
Ask for identification. Normally, most of the unknown people who will knock on your door will be salespersons. There are actually two kinds of them: volunteers who are asking for donations and marketing individuals.
The former group should be able to provide you with a solicitation letter, complete with the heading of the non-profit organization and the signature of their head. Make sure that it has a telephone number, which you can call for verification.
On the other hand, salespersons should carry not only identification cards but also city business license, allowing them to sell goods in the area. You may also want to keep tabs on the community’s rule regarding salespersons. For instance, in Salinas, California, no marketing person is allowed to sell after 9 in the evening.

The loss of employee privacy rights in the workplace is a growing concern among employees, attorneys, and civil libertarian groups.
Although employers in banks, telecommunications, securities exchange, in hi-tech industries, and in other workplaces justify using video surveillance in the workplace to monitor employee behavior to chiefly promote safety, improve productivity, and stop theft, protecting employee privacy must be a top concern.
For if the courts find that the employer’s surveillance methods are less than fair, that firm may find itself knee-deep in lawsuits that could have been prevented.
Employers install hidden surveillance cameras for many good reasons (preventing theft, promoting productivity or protecting employees) that in some cases will intrude upon employee privacy.
Legal observers and human resource specialists who study workplace privacy believe that employee privacy intrusions are more common than previously observed, and that they will increase every year.
According to a 2005 survey conducted by the American Management Association, more than half of the companies surveyed use video monitoring to prevent theft, violence and sabotage (51% in 2005 vs. 33% in 2001).
In addition, the number of companies that use video surveillance to track employees’ performance has also increased, with 10% now videotaping selected job functions and 6% videotaping all employees. Among firms that use video surveillance, 85% notify employees.
As more and more employee groups become aware of how they are being watched, the more likely they will take their employers to court.
These are the four main types of court-upheld privacy violations that could occur in stores, factories and offices and the first type is directly related to video surveillance.
- Intrusion upon seclusion which includes invading worker privacy in bathrooms and changing rooms
- Publication of private employee matters
- Disclosure of medical records
- Appropriation of an employee’s likeness for commercial purposes
In addition, video surveillance must be limited to visual images and cannot include audio in order to comply with federal and state statutes.
Employers need to be proactive and aware of these four privacy violations so that their employees' individual rights are respected and protected.

Network Surveillance System Helps Nab Criminal

After a routine plate check, their plates matched those captured on the IQeye video taken of the robbery, despite the plates being partially covered up.
When confronted with the video evidence, one suspect confessed on the spot.
“The IQeye images are crystal clear, and in this case recording at 10 frames per second gave us the forensic level image detail the police needed to help solve this crime,” said David Engel, SSC, whose company is in charge of the video installation.
